How to practice qigong meditation
Jun 05, 2009 at 04:55 PM
In the summer, there are rivers which run dry and only here and there are left puddles. After few days, the water in them darkens and starts to stink due to the forming of microorganisms and fallout from outside contaminants. The same happens in the energy channels within the human body, when the bioenergy decreases and like the puddles of the river banks is retained only in some deeper places. The retention of qi gradually turns into an environment for decaying and inflammatory processes and a potential base for developing of viruses and bacteria. During the spirng, the melting snows and rains restore the river level, and the current carries away the sewage and the marshy waters. The rivers again become clean and high-water. Similarly, by doing the qigong meditation everyday, one accumulates qi (energy), which gradually cleanses the unpassable places and restores the contacts with the natural energy reserves.

The qigong meditation can be done in standing, sitting or lying positions. Each posture has a definite meaning and goal, however, ultimately they all lead to one and the same result as the postures are only a form, while the most important is the content, the meaning of meditation.

Let's take for example the sitting form of meditation. We chose a medium sized chair or a stool, but not a soft sofa, in which the body "sinks". We take up only half or one third of the seat, in order to not lean. During the meditation, the body is straight - neither bent, nor stretched too tight, but in relaxed, natural state.

With the left hand, the women hold the thumb of the right hand, while men hold the left hand's thumb with the right hand. This is done in order to create a closed loop, on which the energy current, like the electrical current that lights up a "lamp". This is very important for our body: if we draw in our body an imaginary line, connecting the acupuncture point qi hai ("sea of energy"), on the surface of the abdomen, about 3,5 cm (three fingers) below the navel, with ming men ("gate of life"), an energy pass on the back, located between the second and the third lumbar vertebrae, then, on this imaginary line, on two thirds from the surface of the abdomen and one third from the back's surface is located a small cavity, which is visible in an anatomical cross-section. This is dantian - "the elixir field", or "the field for cultivating the energy". Dantian is the place, where in the embryonic stage the body has been connectedf with the mother through the navel string. Now this place represents a natural reservoir of the primordial vital forces and a field where they integrate with the new energies formed during the quiet exercise. That is why, in order to cultivate our vital energy, we put our hands, held in a specific way, next to dantian.

During the whole meditation we also should not think about the way of breathing. It is a natural and self-regulative process, and if there are some changes in it, than they are natural occurrences in the process of readjustment and reharmonization and they stiop with the end of meditation.

After the body is relaxed and the eyes closed, it comes time to relax the mind. With the help of the consciousness and the will, we try to relax as much as we can and forget our thoughts and problems.

The first stage of qigong meditation is namely the relaxation. There exist many techniques for mastering relaxation. Before all, there is an approach to the chaotically rushing and obstructing thoughts. First of all, we should not worry that some thoughts still remain in our brain. This is natural and temporary. Meanwhile, there are thoughts, which are intrusive and persistently unwilling to leave our mind. In such cases, it is important to try to avoid thinking in details.

There is a technique against the wandering and obstructive thoughts, which is especially good for beginners: concentrate your attention on dantian. The energies, which are in it, can be expressed in the form of a light (the same electicity is manifested in the mode of a light). We imagine this light in dantian as a small sun during the day or a small moon at night, which glows inside dantian - "the energy field". We concentrate on it and try to see it inside the body with closed eyes. This has a broad significance. It connects one's consciousness with qi, or in other words, it opens the gate of energy storage (dantian) in order to let a part of the pure primordial energy come out, and together witht the energy that flows in the channels, stimulates the processes of purification, unblocking, and formation of new qi and the various positive changes in the body.

The meaning is an optimal relaxation not only of the body, but also of the mind, after which to enter in a state of deep inner relaxation with little or no sense about the surrounding environment. It is better to choose such techniques, which more directly and quickly lead us to this state.

The second, the most essential stage of the qigong meditation, is called "entering the boundaries". This refers to the boundaries of subconsciousness. In the process of a deeer inner relaxation, one comes to a moment when, althought awake, one almost or completely does not hear or feel the outside auditory and light irritants, as if nothing can make an impression on him. His being is completely directed inwards.

The process of brain activity is also not completely interrupted; from time to time thoughts appear in the mind, which the consciousness only detects, but does not analize. As if the body, mind and spirit have turned on the inside - towards the subconsciousness. This process is completely natural and is achieved gradually in the course of time.

The entering in the boundaries of subconsciousness has two levels - shallow and deep. The shallow level represents namely the aforementioed state of inner self-contemplation, in which the body, mind and spirit only detect the outer and inner occurrences, but do not analize or react to them. The deep level of entering refers to a state, similar to the deep phase of sleeping (REM), when one does not feel oneself, and in the sphere of consciousness it has achieved a unity with time and space.

During this moment, along with the vanished sense of one's existence, it is as if everything around has become bodiless. One does not have a sense about the environment - everything has merged in the great void. This is the state of "wuwei" (non-action), in which one follows his inner nature and acts according to the natural laws, and by this, achieves oneness with Nature. One has a feeling that his body and the surrounding environment have dissapeared, but at the same time, his consciousness is absolutely clear. Some people achieve such a level earlier, other people - later.

As a duration, this state of full detachment and deep inner serenity is usually very short, about 1-2 minutes. However, this is the stage of the best, the most qualitative performance of the quiet exercise. Of course, for the highly-advanced qigong practitioners, the duration of the deep inner serenity and state of wuwei is longer.

The third, the closing stage of qigong meditation is called shou gong("returning", "closing"). When we spontaneously start to feel that the time for ending the quiet exercise is apporaching, we should not open the eyes and the hands suddenly, but gradually and with ease to return to reality. Similarly, we do not suddenly jump out of bed after sleep, but instead, remain laying for a few minutes in order to adapt ourselves.

During the closing stage of meditation, first, we make several deep inhalations and exhalations and then wait 2-3 minutes for the energy to return, "to sink" to the lower dantian. Like in the first stage of meditation, during this stage again we use our mind to lead qi back to dantian. The concentration of the mind, aiming to direct the energy toward the lower dantian should be made with ease. We simply have to think about dantian and to direct our attention to it without a special concentration, and qi will start to return to it. In 2-3 minutes, we open the hands and the eyes. The qigong meditation is completed.

Swine flu & Chinese Medical Astrology
Apr 29, 2009 at 05:05 PM

The current swine flu outbreak can be explained with the theory of 5 periods and 6 energies in Chinese Medical Astrology.

According to the theory of 5 periods and 6 energies, the year of Earth Ox (ji chou) is characterized with more humidity and cold patterns in the weather.

The first half of the year is more windy and humid, while the second half of the year is expected to be a little bit colder than usually.

The year is divided into 6 energy phases with specific domination of the elements in the “main energy” and "guest energy” (this is related to the 24 solar seasons):

Period 1: January 21st – March 21st – wood (main qi) + wood (guest qi)

Period 2: March 21st – May 21st – fire (main qi) + fire (guest qi)

Period 3: May 21st – July 23rd – fire (main qi) + earth (guest qi)

Period 4: July 23rd – September 23rd – earth (main qi) + fire (guest qi)

Period 5: September 23rd – November 23rd – metal (main qi) + metal (guest qi)

Period 6: November 23rd – January 21st (2010) – water (main qi) + water (guest qi)

As a whole, the guest qi is distributed very well in 2009 and the weather is normal.

However, starting from the Spring Equinox (when Period 2 begins), the weather is dominated by Fire (jun huo), which is seen both in the main energy and in the guest energy. The two Fire patterns stimulate each other and initiate “great fire”. This fire is combined with the humid climate tendency in the first half of the year. So, during this time (Period 2) febrile diseases and epidemics easily spread out. In this way, the cause of the epidemic is due to pathogenic phlegm and heat entering the body. This leads to accumulation of turbid energy (zhuo qi). The viruses quickly spread out during the time of pathogenic phlegm and heat.

The cure : herbs and foods that expel Phlegm-Heat from the body. For example – honeysuckle flowers - Lonicera Japonica (jin yin hua), Isatis root (ban lan gen), dandelion (pu gong yin), mung beans (lu dou), rice vinegar.

Winter Solstice
Apr 03, 2009 at 04:17 PM
The 3-4 days before and after the Winter Solstice are characterized with very powerful positive energy in Nature. This is a good time for receiving energy from Nature, important time for more meditation and relaxation. Even in a non-meditation state one can feel how the energy and the blood in the body are very intensified as if in a meditation state.

2012: Natural Cycles and Natural Thinking
Mar 16, 2009 at 11:38 AM

The panic about the prophecies for the end of the world in 1999 already is gone, and here now starts a new wave of tension regarding the year of 2012.

According to the calendar of the ancient Mayans, on December 23, 2012, ends a big cycle. Some people dramatize the things and interpret this date as an end of the world. But actually, this is just the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new one.

In the Mayan calendar there are one type of cycles, while in the Chinese calendar there are other cycles used (for example the 60-year cycle). There are many methods for calculation of the cycles. Every month, every day, every minute and second also represent different types of cycles. The universe is complex and infinite. We always mark the beginning and passing of many cycles. We even don’t know about the existence of some of them.

When there is a lack of scientific attitude, one very easily can indulge into mystics. In the past, when the people observed the passing of comets on the sky, they were horrified and predicted end of the world. Always when there arrives a new cosmic cycle or new phenomena and new changes happen, many people frighten and worry about the future.

The solar activity increases and decreases for a period of 11 years. The principles of the solar cycle are similar to that of the lunar cycle: the beginning of a certain solar cycle resembles the time of new moon. At that time, the solar activity is low. The activation of the solar storms marks the maximum of the solar cycle and its meaning resembles the time of full moon. Both full moon and the years of increased solar activity have a great influence on the living creatures on Earth. The scientists have found out that during the maximum of the solar activity, there is an increase of psychological problems, inner tension and pathogenic outbreaks. This is due to the increased energy release from Sun, which stimulates and activates the flow of energy in the body. As a result, there occur various conditions of health, but everything depends on the openness and free passability of the energy channels in the body and the quality of matter. If one regularly practice qigong meditation or other similar methods for increasing the energy in the body, then one’s energy system gradually will become more and more opened and passable and of a better quality. When the body is opened and passable, one can more easily and smoothly accept the numerous cosmic influences and one will be able more quickly to adapt to the changes. Here is an example: when one’s blood pressure rises, if his energy channels are opened, then the blood pressure goes down very fast and recovers its normal indexes. In the same way, when there come solar storms and other energy effects from the cosmos, they will have a more moderate effect on the energy-passable organisms.

The last solar storms were in 2003, and the next activation of the solar eruption and magnetic storms are expected approximately in 2012. Some people predict that these will be so powerful that they will lead to the pole?shifts?and end of the world. The truth is that the change of poles is a very relative term: some scientists claim that this is a slow process of hundreds and even thousands of years, while according to other scientists this is unpredictable phenomenon. Let’s put this theme to the scientists, and we better look more calmly and naturally at things.

In fact, 2012 is not a problem. The problem is in our mind and our understanding of the natural cycles. We need to develop scientific and objective attitude toward everything. The cyclical changes are natural phenomenon and we have to look at them naturally.

When there arrives a new phenomenon, first of all it is important to find out what are his characteristic features and then to see how best to adapt to the changes. The adaptation includes many methods, but the main principle is to achieve a harmony with the new changes. What is lacking have to be supplied, and what is in excess ?to be cleared out. For example, in every person the inner condition of the body is different: some people lack vitamin B, others need more calcium; still others need to clear the pathogenic phlegm from the body. Astrologically, this could be explained in this way: some people have excessive metal element, others ?need more fire, still others have too much wood, etc. All this shows different characteristics, a tendency to develop certain diseases, cycles of advancement and fall in life, etc.

An essential benefit for achieving better adaptation to the different changes render the practice of qigong meditation, the inner harmony and preservation of calmness of the mind, the positive attitude, the natural and objective thinking, healthy nutrition, the holistic approach and following the principles of Nature.

As a whole, every cycle has its own characteristic. The bigger and longer cycles render a continued influence on the living organisms and thus they have essential meaning for the character of one whole generation, the tendencies in the development of humankind. According to western astrology, during these several years there are some important changes of cycles, related with the slowly moving planets Neptune, Uranus and Pluto. In the end of 2008 (on November 26th) Pluto enters Capricorn, where it will stay for 16 years (till 2024). This is regarded as an important time of change, as Pluto in Capricorn will stimulate the energy transformations in society and in people’s mind. In the year of 2011, Uranus enters Aries and this will stimulate a change of consciousness. And in December 2012, there will come another important cyclical change: Neptune will enter the zodiacal sign of Pisces, which is regarded as a new incitement for spiritual development. All this is a slow and gradual process, but not a sudden change.

In some publications regarding the year of 2012 it is written that the changes of 2012 will happen only to some separate people, which “will enter into the new future world? while for the others everything will remain like before and they will perceive nothing; for them “the world will become much worse and they will fall in a lower, inferior world? According to these articles, there is expected a separation between the conscious and matured ones and those of a lower level of consciousness. Such thoughts very easily lean toward disunion and egoism, and they create a type of spiritual aristocracy and a sense of supremacy over the others. Many people talk about spiritual development, but when they analyze things, some people start to separate the humans into “higher?and “lower? more spiritually developed and less developed ones. This division sometimes leads to improper acts: defending the interests only of a separate group of people, only of the “higher? “developed?ones, while the remaining part of people is neglected. They think that only they are the spiritual ones, the good ones and the others are on a lower stage of development and there is no way to help them. Such judgements lack a holistic thinking and holistic approach, they lack the willingness to help the others to develop as well. It is interesting to point out that one of the characteristics of Neptune in Pisces (the cycle, which starts in 2012) is namely the desire for a union and spiritual development for all.

It is important to know that the changes are equal for everyone, but not only for separate, “God’s elect?people or only for those who cultivate themselves and the more conscious ones. The main principle is that everyone has chances, everyone has the possibilities to go on and develop, no matter whether this will happen earlier or later.

In Dao De Jing, Lao Zi says that “the Dao of Heaven is impartial? The Dao of Heaven, (and the cycles of Nature) doesn’t have special feelings only to certain people, but it is objective and equal to all, it helps and influences all, it does not serve just the interests of some people. When there is a rain, it does not intentionally rain only to some people and avoid others. It simply rains. The Sun also shines on everywhere and influences everyone. That is why it is said that the natural phenomena and cycles bring influence to all. Sun Yatsen has one famous saying: “All under Heaven are equal? Developing his thought, we can say: ?B>The Heavenly Dao is equal for the use of all? The cycles of Nature are equal to all, but at the same time, of course, they will reflect to the different people in different ways. In astrology, the individual horoscopes very precisely show how the cycles of astrological signs and transits of the planets reflect in a different way. For example, 2012 is the year of water dragon (ren chen). Depending on the proportion of elements in the individual horoscope, this year will have various types of influences. To those, who need the water element, they will get it in 2012, because the stem of the year contains water element. To others this water element may come too much, or the ?I>chen?branch sign in 2012 may cause certain problems to them. No matter how conscious and spiritual is one, if he is in a cycle, which is not very beneficial to him, this inevitably will bring him certain types of disharmony, problems and discomforts ?either reflecting his work, his health condition, or in other aspects of his life. That is why, the transits of planets and the different position of stars and signs in 2012, like in every other year, will reflect very individually in the horoscopes.

However, the most important and essential is that the changes are generally equal to all. No matter what are the cycles, we always have to exert active efforts for achieving a greater harmony and adaptation.

The study of the new phenomena is very helpful, so that the people will understand and relate them more objectively. We have to approach the new cycles, the phenomena and their manifestations in a scientific, holistic and natural way, without mystic.
